While the origins of Chris and my first meeting as friends are obscured by time in the tomes of history and lack of popular social media (see: Senior year of College), there is documentation of us reconnecting and beginning our time as a couple.
On the morning of August 25th, 2011, I awoke to a message in my inbox from a certain gentleman with a certain query: Might I be interested in joining this gentleman to his friends wedding being held up in Asheville, NC in October?
The invitation intrigued me, for not only did be quote David Bowie within the request, but he spoke of wondrous things such as magic chairs that fly at ludicrous speeds. But before responding to his message, I had to check out a few things first, as any sensible lady would when invited out on a date (500 miles away.) My first call was to Erin, who is friends with both myself and this gentleman suitor, to verify that he was “on the up and up” so to speak. (See: Has not turned into an axe-murderer, as she was aware of.)
Her response: “If you do not go out with him, I will never speak to you again.”
Needless to say, she vouched for him fully. So I conveyed my interest in joining him on this Asheville adventure, and asked a few important questions of my own. While ludicrous is a perfectly acceptable speed, one would want to make sure there was little to no chance of finding oneself going to plaid!
My fears were allayed and we continued a back-and-forth of details and information. E-mails turned into text messages, text messages into long phone calls, and phone calls into hours on Skype. I must say that modern technology was a huge assistance in Chris and my budding relationship. We found ourselves sharing our day-to-day events with each other, and our not so day-to-day.
By the time I stepped off the plane and saw Chris in person for the first time in years, we had already reconnected as good friends through our many hours talking. But now, we were starting the longest first date I have ever known. And it was a BLAST!
